HEALTH AND SAFETY

Health

Public health services in Brazil are free for foreign tourists. Therefore, if you develop any health problems, just call the Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) by phone at 192. The call is toll-free.

Basic Care

– Brazil is a country with a tropical climate, so a constant intake of fluids is recommended to avoid dehydration.
– Wear comfortable clothing and protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat (or cap), as well as sunglasses and sunscreen. Avoid direct sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm.
– Always carry an insect repellent with you for use when needed.
– Wash your hands with soap and water several times a day, especially after using public transportation and visiting places with large movement of people.
– Avoid consuming food in poor conditions of preparation and packaging.
– When biking or hiking, choose to take food that can remain unrefrigerated and not spoil in the heat.

Vaccines

No vaccines against any disease are required to enter Brazil. However, the country has the so-called Areas with Vaccination Recommendation (ACRV), in which it is advisable to be vaccinated against yellow fever before the visit. Yellow fever is a disease transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
So, if you have never taken the vaccine, you should take it 10 days prior the trip (this period is not necessary if you have already been vaccinated previously).

Safety

A few tips on safety during your trip:

– Upon arrival at the airport, look for insured taxis.
– If you need to open your wallet in public, avoid exposing large bills of money.
– Do not put your wallet or phone in your back pocket, particularly in very crowded places.
– Do not carry large amounts of cash in purses or your wallet. Take only small amounts of the country’s currency for daily expenses.
– If you need to go out with large amounts of cash, store it in bags inside your clothing, closed with a zipper or Velcro and secured with an elastic strap around the waist.
– Avoid going out with important documents and, if you have two credit cards, take only one with you. Thus, if it ends up being stolen, you have another card to make future expenses.
– Leave your passport at the place where you are staying and walk only with a certified copy of it.
– Use the safety box of the place where you are staying, if any, to keep your money, original passport, credit cards, and other important items.
– Most thefts occur in places with large concentrations of people, such as markets, subway stations, bus stations, and crowded buses. Luggage theft is also common at airport lounges. Be careful.
– Avoid walking in remote areas or districts identified as dangerous by the local population. This advice is especially important in large cities and for people travelling alone.
– Be wary of people who approach you to offer a clandestine taxi at an airport or any other location.
– If you are going to the beach, do not leave your valuables in the sand when going for a swim.
– If you rent a car, do not leave any visible luggage inside. If this is unavoidable, try parking the vehicle in a safe place, where there is policing.

Electricity

Electrical voltage: In all cities of Espírito Santo, the default voltage is 127 volts. However, a few establishments, hotels and residences may have a voltage of 220 volts.

It should be noted that Brazil has recently adopted a new standard of power outlets, following the international standard: the model of grounded bipolar plugs and sockets (three pins). However, because the change is recent, many buildings still have the bipolar model (with two pins).

ACCESS INFORMATION

How to get to Vitória

Access to the city is made by air, sea, road or rail. The main entries are via the BR-101 highway, which links the South and Northeast regions of Brazil with the Vitória Metro Area, the BR-262 highway, which connects the Center-West to Vitória, and the ES-060 highway, also known as Rodovia do Sol, which is the regional coastal connection.
The main gateway by air is the Vitória Airport. The Vitória-Minas Railway, which supports the Center-East corridor, also carries passengers between Belo Horizonte and the Vitória Metro Area.
Access by sea is made by small vessels, international cargo vessels, and cruise ships, which make stops in the port of Vitória.

To know the documentation and procedures for granting visas, please refer to the Brazilian embassy or consulate in your country of origin.

Driver’s license

Tourists with a driver’s license valid abroad can drive in Brazil if the visit is to last less than 180 days. For longer stays, a Brazilian license corresponding to the foreign license is required. It is crucial that your foreign driver’s license and identity documents are valid.
Foreign tourist drivers must comply with the Brazilian law.

Travelling with Animals

Please inquire in advance about your airline’s procedures for transporting pets. The marketing and transport of wild animals in the country and abroad is prohibited. Brazilian law provides for imprisonment for those involved in such practices.
